Happy European Day of Languages 2019! A day to celebrate linguistic diversity and encourage the preservation of European languages! If you currently live in Europe or are looking to relocate there, you may be interested to know where the day came from and what the goal was for it.
This event dates back to 2001 where the Council of Europe and the European Union joined together to organise the European Year of Languages with the goal of celebrating language diversity and encouraging an increase in language skills.
The year was a huge success with more than a quarter of coordinators stating that it has achieved more than they were expecting and more than 80% willing to make it an annual event. And so, the Council of Europe declared the European Day of Languages would be celebrated on the 26th September every year.
So how do you celebrate European Day of Languages? You will find the day is widely celebrated in schools by both staff and pupils from nursery through to university. Celebrations range from school room activities to large scale parties. Everyone can get involved with events organised across Europe for everyone to engage with. Or maybe today is the day you start learning a new language or share something from your own.
Today is a day to celebrate the beauty of languages and to promote both the learning and preservation of the 6000+ languages in the world!
