A plan for a £7 billion ‘brain-belt’ expressway spanning central England is being proposed by the government-backed NIC (National Infrastructure Commission).
The transport links would connect Oxford, Cambridge, Bedford and Milton Keynes – and could lead to the creation of the UK’s first new towns in half a century, from smaller cities of around 10,000 homes through to brand new city-scale developments of 150,000 homes plus.
A report published by the commission said the plan could deliver over one million new homes and jobs in the surrounding areas by 2050, boosting the economy considerably.
The areas spanning Cambridge, Milton Keynes and Oxford attract the brightest and best from the most cutting edge industries. However, the city is known to be suffering from a distinct lack of available homes, and the infrastructure network is feeling the strain, pricing people out of the market.
Businesses are also suffering, with many struggling to recruit staff. With this area being one of the most economically essential parts in the UK, local leaders are being urged to work with the government by investing heavily in improved road and rail links, while also delivering a million new homes and jobs.
This development offers the opportunity to create a fourth economic powerhouse for the UK to rival those in London, the Midlands and the North.
